Grades
Grading this year is going to be different than students may be used to seeing.  All test and quizzes will be strictly based on the standards that are taught in class.  Standards Based Grading seeks to provide grades that are consistent, accurate, meaningful, and most of all that support learning.

Two types of assessments will be used to support learning:
-          Formative assessments are used for student learning to provide feedback and time for improvement.
-          Summative assessments are assessment of learning used to show student achievement.

Standards Based Grading links both of these assessment types to individual learning that are based truly on the mastery of a standard.  Students will have one week from the date of the formative or summative assessment to complete a retake or demonstrate that they can meet the standard.  Students need to arrange a date and time within that week to stay after school for remediation and retakes.

So who is eligible to retake a formative or summative assessment?  The answer is anyone that scores below a 70% (less that mastery) and has completed all of their classwork, homework, or any other work that was used to prepare for the assessment.

All work that is used as work to prepare for an assessment is to be turned in completed and on time.  Homework is due when you walk in the class.  Late work is not accepted without an excused absence note from the office.  Incomplete work is not accepted, all answers MUST be attempted in order to receive credit.  There is a reason that I do not accept late/incomplete work.  A day will come when they have jobs where they report to someone else and showing up late or doing half of the job will get you fired.  It is a life lesson that needs to be learned sooner rather than later.

This is going to be a shock to some kids and parents so please be prepared to work through the new changes and a new way of assessing learning.  At the end of the day I want them to succeed.  If they put in the work to master the standard their grade will reflect that hard work.

The following scale represents the approximate weight of grades for each nine weeks:

10%- Participation, Notebook/Notes,
70%- Quizzes, Unit Tests, and Projects (Standards Based)
20%- Mid-Term Exam 1st Semester / QualityCore® End of Course Assessment for Biology 2nd Semester

Textbooks/CDs
Currently, we will not have enough books for everyone to take home.  We don’t use the textbooks all that much, but they are a great resource for the students to use if they are interested.  They can check them out anytime.

BYOD
Students will be allowed to “Bring Your Own Devices” to my class.  This includes phone with the ability to use the internet/text and personal computers.  More details to come.

15/15 Rule
You may not leave the first 15 minutes or the last 15 minutes of class.  If you do leave, please sign in and out of classroom with your name, the time, and a hall pass in hand.  If you abuse the privilege of leaving class that option may disappear.
